With the cherry blossom season ending in April, it’s time to look forward to mark new fun-filled activities on our calendars. Here are 5 Japanese events you can catch in May this month!

Tanjong Pagar Shotengai 2018

Here’s a tasty excuse to go restaurant-hopping in Tanjong Pagar this May! To encourage the appreciation of Japanese cuisine in Tanjong Pagar, WAttention Singapore and Mangosteen Club have launched a Shotengai (商店街-shopping arcade) Stamp Card campaign in the area. Dine at any of the 38 participating outlets throughout May till 7 June, and get a stamp after your meal. Collect enough stamps to get a spin on the Fukibiki, a traditional Japanese lucky draw machine, and you could find youself on a free trip to Japan!

Attend a Children’s Day Party

Children’s Day in Japan falls on May 5, and that means it’s time to hang the koinobori carp streamers and enjoy mochi rice cakes! Enjoy activities on the same day in Singapore by signing up for the Japanese Association of Singapore’s Children’s Day Party, where children can try their hand at making a paper kabuto helmet, along with picture-show and games too.

Catch a play on a classic Japanese tale

Catch this theatre interpretation of the classic tale Urashimo Taro, a fisherman who is invited to stay in an underwater palace as thanks by a princess after saving a turtle. Staged by Aya Nakamura, the brilliant artist fuses both paper theatre and puppets in this captivating stage play.

Go on a musical romp at the Esplanade

Join Japanese entertainer Yosuke Ikeda at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre as he brings you on a musical escapade of mime, magic, and his own rendition of the Beatles ‘Hello, Goodbye’ too.
